BACKGROUND/RELATED STRATEGIC GOAL:
Over the past five years, telecommunications companies have been developing a network of small wireless communication facilities, generally within public rights-of-way, to deliver 5G cellular service nationwide. Small-cell networks are composed of small radio antennas that are attached to existing and new utility poles. To support this technology, the Federal Communications Commission and State of Florida passed an order and legislation pre-empting much of local control over small-cell cellular installations, giving wireless providers significant discretion over where they install each wireless node, restricting fees that local governments can charge, and providing narrow timelines for approval of permits.
A presentation on the permitting of small-cell wireless infrastructure within Martin County will be provided at the Board of County Commissioners Meeting.
The presentation will be provided by Supplemental Memorandum.
