Staff recommends the decommissioning of two artworks: “Yap Money Stones” by artist Gary Gresko, currently installed in Gazebo Park, Stuart and “Live, Learn, Loggerhead” by artist Mia Lindberg, currently installed at Hobe Sound Beach.

BACKGROUND/RELATED STRATEGIC GOAL:
As stated in Chapter 13 - Art in Public Places in the Martin County Code of Ordinances, 13.8.C Public art may be decommissioned, surplused and sold or may be donated to a not-for-profit entity or governmental agency at the sole discretion of the Board of County Commissioners.
It is time for the artwork in Gazebo Park to be replaced. The Gresko exhibit, installed in 2021, consists of 5 separate, contemporary pieces. Three of those (Red Angle, Transponder and Tumbling Toward the Sun) require some maintenance and may be placed elsewhere in the county. Silent Sounds of Service will be going to Firehouse # 21 on Mapp Road in the Palm City CRA. Approval is requested to decommission Yap Money Stones, the fifth Gresko sculpture. The artwork requires repair, is no longer relevant to the current inventory, and does not have a viable permanent location.
Additionally, Hobe Sound Beach is being renovated and the entire area will be under construction. The “Live, Learn, Loggerhead!” exhibit, installed on and around the current restrooms building in 2011, is made up of two wood and mosaic informational signs, now barely legible; a fresco, that we will endeavor to save on a wall of the restroom building that is slated for demolition; one large ceramic Loggerhead turtle, approximately 15-20 small ceramic hatchlings, a whitewashed picket fence and some additional signage. As the County is no longer able to provide ongoing care, storage, or display for the exhibit’s elements, and the artwork is no longer suitable for this evolving public space, the artist, Mia Lindberg, will remove and retain the mosaic sign stands, the Loggerhead turtle, the hatchlings, and, if feasible, the fresco.

This item has been reviewed for legal sufficiency to determine whether it is consistent with applicable
law, and legal staff have identified and addressed legal risks and developed strategies for legal defensibility, as applicable.
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Move that the Public Art Advisory Committee recommend decommissioning these two artworks - Yap Money Stones and Live, Learn, Loggerhead - to the Board of County Commissioners.
