EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:executive summary

At this year’s Martin County Arts Fest, Art in Public Places will be supporting one day of the mobile glass blowing unit from the Corning Museum of Glass. Consistent with Board direction, local artists have submitted potential designs for the Rio Roundabout and/or the Manatee Gateway that would include glass pieces manufactured by the Corning Glass artists during Arts Fest.

BACKGROUND/RELATED STRATEGIC GOAL:

Upon recommendation from the Public Art Advisory Committee (PAAC), the Board of County Commissioners (Board) approved funding through Art in Public Places to support one day of the mobile glass unit from the Corning Museum of Glass at Arts Fest 2020. The PAAC also recommended, and the Board approved staff time, signage costs and the further design exploration with local artists for new artwork to complete the Rio Roundabout project or replace the Manatee Gateway project, with conceptual designs incorporating the glasswork created by the mobile glass unit. The conceptual designs are to be presented to the Board for approval after Arts Fest.

Staff, with guidance and assistance of the Arts Foundation and local artist Mia Lindstrom, met with local metal artists Walter Posten from Stuart and Ken Sandlin from Fort Pierce.  Both came highly recommended and were tasked with submitting designs for the identified projects. The designs and recommendations will be presented to the Board after Arts Fest, showing the incorporation of the glasswork into the designs. The PAAC is requested to provide input, comment, and recommendations on the conceptual designs and also on the glass pieces to be created by the Corning Museum of Glass mobile glass blowing unit.
