The schoolhouse was built in the 1930’s and served to educate the African American children of Martin County. The County expended numerous man hours and made significant financial commitments to rehabilitate the schoolhouse to preserve the historic nature of the schoolhouse. BHI’s mission is to seek, uncover, share, and preserve the interrelationship of African American, Native American, Spanish American, and European American history. BHI plans to highlight the challenges, achievements, and contributions of Black Americans and women shaping Martin County into the distinct community it is today. BHI is desirous of utilizing the One Room Schoolhouse as a museum and cultural center to further educate the public to the challenges, achievements, and contributions that graduates of the One Room Schoolhouse have helped overcome and shape Martin County as a distinct community.
