BACKGROUND/RELATED STRATEGIC GOAL:
The facility will address urgent needs such as enhanced security measures, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance, improved living and working conditions for ocean rescue staff. The existing facility lacks the space and modern safety features required to meet the increasing demands of ocean rescue operations.
The current facility contains an 80-square-foot area for Ocean Rescue that raises several health and safety concerns. Located between the public restrooms, it serves as the bathroom, kitchen, medical storage, and patient triage area, all cramped into a single room. This layout poses significant sanitary issues, particularly since the septic system has backed up in the past. Additionally, there is no designated shelter for staff during inclement weather, forcing them to take refuge in their personal vehicles. The facility also lacks proper storage for equipment, leaving it exposed to the elements, including wind-driven salt spray, which can cause rapid deterioration of vital gear.
Upgrading the facility is essential to address these critical needs and enhance operational efficiency. Improved security, ADA compliance, and better living and working conditions for ocean rescue staff will not only meet the growing demands of rescue operations but also ensure a safer environment for both staff and the public. This investment will enable Martin County Ocean Rescue to operate more effectively and provide a higher level of service to the community.
The project’s Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) sheet is included. This project was initiated in Fiscal Year 2023. A PowerPoint presentation of the existing and proposed project is also included.
