BACKGROUND/RELATED STRATEGIC GOAL:

Article 6 Civil Legal Assistance for the Indigent of Chapter 47 Courts, General Ordinances, Martin County Code provides for additional filing fees for civil matters which are paid to the Legal Aid Society of the Martin County Bar Association which are used for a program to provide civil legal services to poor and indigent people in Martin County.

For over 25 years our Legal Aid Society has had a successful working relationship with Florida Rural Legal Services, providing legal services to our most vulnerable citizens here in Martin County. It provides access to justice for the most vulnerable members of our communities. If not for Florida Rural Legal Services, our low income individuals and families facing dire circumstances would not have had the benefit of legal representation. These include victims of domestic violence, human trafficking, families facing homelessness, elderly who have been exploited, veterans, farmworkers, and children. Florida Rural Legal Services is funded in part from the Legal Services Corporation. Since such funding is currently in competition, the Legal Aid Society has requested a letter in support of funding for Florida Rural Legal Services.
