BACKGROUND/RELATED STRATEGIC GOAL:
This year’s BGCMC Youth of the Year winner was Mildred Castillo. Having just finished the 10th-grade at South Fork High School-where she was a dual-enrolled honors student-Mildred served as president of Keystone Club, former president of Torch Club and on our culinary team as a junior sous chef on the BGCMC Fork in the Road food truck. This responsibility allows her to earn a paycheck, which she uses to help support her family.
The oldest of two siblings, Mildred was raised by a single mother following her father’s death when she was very young. Her family moved from Jupiter to Hobe Sound when she was in the fifth grade. To smooth out the adjustment and give her a chance to make friends, Mildred’s mom brought her to Boys & Girls Clubs’ Hobe Sound facility. She was a little shy at first, but BGCMC mentors encouraged Mildred to share her wonderful gifts and personality. Fortunately, she followed that advice and has blossomed every day since.
After claiming the Youth of the Year title at the district level, Mildred truly distinguished herself during the state competition in Tallahassee. She made it all the way to the final four contestants, earning the opportunity to give a speech in the old Senate chambers of the Historic Capital.
Mildred is also winner of BGCMC’s Copper Key Scholarship, which enables her to attend any college or university in Florida for no cost. Right now, she’s considering Florida Atlantic University and majoring in nursing.
