HPB – FLORIDA HISTORICAL MARKER OPPORTUNITIES
end
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:executive summary
At its August 17, 2026, meeting, the Historic Preservation Board discussed opportunities to recognize additional historic properties in Martin County through the Florida Historical Marker Program. As part of this discussion, the Board reviewed five County-owned historic properties that do not currently have Florida Historical Markers: 1) The Log Cabin; 2) Martin County Courthouse Cultural Center; 3) Mansion at Tuckahoe; 4) House of Refuge; and 5) Captain Sewall's House.
During the meeting, the Board expressed interest in pursuing Florida Historical Marker applications for the House of Refuge, Mansion at Tuckahoe, and Martin County Courthouse Cultural Center.
Upon further review, staff recommends prioritizing Captain Sewall's House and the Log Cabin, as both properties currently hold only local historic designations. In comparison, the House of Refuge, Mansion at Tuckahoe, and Martin County Courthouse Cultural Center are already listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Staff believes pursuing Florida Historical Markers for Captain Sewall's House and the Log Cabin would provide an opportunity to expand recognition of these properties beyond the local level.
Staff has prepared draft Florida Historical Marker applications for Captain Sewall's House and the Log Cabin, which are attached for the Board's review and consideration.
