This presentation will provide an update to the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) about recent and planned water quality accomplishments. The projects include opportunities identified in a 2022 Water Quality Needs Assessment that will be necessary to meet the mandated St. Lucie Basin Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) as well as estuary ecological restoration projects that will contribute to a sustainable restoration condition. The presentation will also include a summary of the 2024 wet season and current conditions

BACKGROUND/RELATED STRATEGIC GOAL:
Martin County is home to one of the most bio-diverse ecosystems in the world. The residents and visitors to Martin County are highly dependent upon its unique blend of critical natural systems for health, recreation, economic prosperity, and quality of life.
The BOCC has demonstrated a profound understanding of this and an unmatched commitment to advocacy, policies and projects that restore and protect these critical resources. In the past 24 years the BOCC has completed 44 projects for stormwater quality treatment and have completed utility infrastructure projects to connect almost 6,000 septic systems to central sewer, while also removing 70 package wastewater treatment plants.
The BOCC has partnered with state and federal agencies to advance policy and project ideas that will address the regional ecosystem and water quality restoration needs. This effort has brought billions in state and federal funding to bear on these issues and after decades of BOCC commitment, real restoration objectives are within reach.
