BACKGROUND/RELATED STRATEGIC GOAL:

Staff has attended numerous meetings with various groups interested with the creation of affordable housing in Martin County. At these various meetings there has been consensus that accessory dwelling units (ADUs) can provide another option for affordable housing in lieu of multi-family developments while having minimum impact on the community. Staff is seeking direction from the Board of County Commissioners to authorize review of the Martin County Comprehensive Growth Management Plan (CGMP) and the Land Development Regulations (LDR) and recommend revisions pertaining to ADUs.

This item has been reviewed for legal sufficiency to determine whether it is consistent with applicable law, has identified and addressed legal risks, and has developed strategies for legal defensibility.

RECOMMENDED ACTION:

RECOMMENDATION
Move that the Board direct staff to research and propose revisions to the Comprehensive Growth Management Plan and/or the Land Development Regulations for accessory dwelling units in furtherance of providing affordable housing.
