HISTORIC PRESERVATION BOARD - FLORIDA HISTORICAL MARKER OPPORTUNITIES
end
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:executive summary
At the previous meeting, the Historic Preservation Board discussed making the identification and recognition of additional historic properties in Martin County a priority.
Martin County currently has nine Florida Historical Markers. As a starting point for further discussion, staff has identified five County-owned public properties that may be considered for future Florida Historical Marker applications: 1) The Log Cabin; 2) Martin County Courthouse Cultural Center; 3) Mansion at Tuckahoe; 4) House of Refuge; and 5) Captain Sewall's House.
The current cost of a Florida Historical Marker is $3,145 for a single-sided marker and $3,595 for a double-sided marker.
Application Process:
Applicants are responsible for documenting the historical significance of the property, preparing proposed marker text, obtaining property owner approval, submitting the application and supporting materials, purchasing the marker, and coordinating installation.
Applications are accepted year-round and reviewed by the three-member State Historical Marker Council. Applications must be submitted by the established deadline, generally at least one month before a Council meeting, to be considered at that meeting.
