BACKGROUND/RELATED STRATEGIC GOAL:
Martin County conducts landscape maintenance at 32 county facilities, 43 stormwater treatment areas, 72 parks, and along 76 enhanced road right of way routes. These areas are managed by the General Services, Public Works, and Parks and Recreation Departments. County and contractor staff are responsible for conducting landscape maintenance in accordance with the standards set forth by the County. Landscape maintenance standards vary due to differences between contracts and the location, public purpose, and funding mechanism for the site.
On September 28th, 2019 the Board directed staff to prepare a presentation on the County’s landscape maintenance standards specifically as they pertain to roads and buildings. Enhanced road right of ways are mowed 25 times per year. The 32 county facilities are mowed 36 times per year. A higher level of service is typically expected for facilities than along roadways for turf maintenance. Additional maintenance on plant beds and trees is conducted once per month, in both areas, which is consistent with other county programs. Success and vitality of plantings is influenced by plant age, nutrient levels, soil pH, drainage, and environmental factors such as wind and salt spray.
