BACKGROUND/RELATED STRATEGIC GOAL:

The IRL South project was planned as a part of CERP.  It was authorized by congress in 2000 and it includes the following elements: C-44 Stormwater Treatment Area (STA) and Reservoir, C-23/23 STA, C-23/24 North Reservoir, C-23/24 South Reservoir, C-25 STA and Reservoir, 90,000 acres of land acquisition, estuary muck removal, oyster habitat rehabilitation, and the C-23/44 interconnect.

Martin County has been a vested and strategic partner in planning and executing these projects to ensure that water quality impacts from the Central and South Florida water drainage system are corrected for the health of the St. Lucie River and Estuary.

The C-44 STA is nearly complete and the C-44 Reservoir is approaching completion.  Attention has been shifting to progress on the C-23/24 projects in St. Lucie County which will address nutrient content and timing/quantity of water deliveries from the North Fork.  The BOCC has repeatedly expressed its support for progress on these projects.
