BACKGROUND/RELATED STRATEGIC GOAL:

Martin County experienced two significant rainfall events in the past month.  According to the South Florida Water Management District approximately 30 inches has fallen in the Southeast portion of the County (see attached).  Staff is aware of 32 homes flooded in the Eastern portion of the County from Jensen Beach to Hobe Sound due to this storm event. Martin County Emergency Management has been assisting by coordinating with the Red Cross and other community service organization to help displaced residents get hotel rooms or temporary housing.

The flooding also impacted the wastewater collection system by flooding lift stations and road flooding contributed water pouring into sewer manhole covers. Martin County Utilities did not have any spills and all the excess water coming into the plant was able to be properly treated.  South Martin Regional Utilities did have three spills into surface water bodies that were reported to the Department of Environmental Protection.

Staff from the Public Works Department, Parks Department and Utilities Department worked 24 hours a day during the event trying to reduce flood impacts.  Martin County Fire Rescue and the Sheriff’s office also provided invaluable support in this endeavor.  All the employees working this event worked extremely well together with several going above and beyond.

Because staff has ongoing cleanup actions at the time of this writing a PowerPoint presentation which details the areas which suffered the most severe flooding and summary won’t be available until Monday.

An agenda item after-action report with recommendations will be prepared and discussed at a later Board meeting.
