BACKGROUND/RELATED STRATEGIC GOAL:
The position of Fire Chief was initially vacated in October 2020 when then Chief Schobel left his employment via the Voluntary Early Separation Incentive Program (VESIP). Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Herndon was placed into the role of Interim Fire Chief to allow for a smooth transition and the least disruption to operations of the department. Battalion Chief, Chief Chad Cianciulli was placed into the position of Interim Deputy Chief to assist and maintain operations of the department. Chief Herndon recently decided to take advantage of the current VESIP being offered and leave his employment with Martin County effective in March 2021, but due to an extensive amount of leave he had accumulated, his last physical presence in the department was at the end of January 2021. At that time, Chief Cianciulli was placed into the position of Interim Fire Chief to ensure operations continued with minimal disruption.
The position of Fire Chief was advertised internally with two candidates applying for the position. An interview panel was established with both candidates being interviewed on February 15, 2021. Chief Cianciulli was selected and is being recommended for confirmation as Fire Chief by the Board per Florida Statutes Section 125.74(k).
