BACKGROUND/RELATED STRATEGIC GOAL:

On October 19, 2021, County staff and the Florida Department of Transportation's (FDOT) Landscape Architect consultant presented the FDOT SR-76 (S Kanner Highway) Landscaping concept design to the Board of County Commissioners (Board). The project extent is the S Kanner Highway right-of-way from SE Cove Road to SW Cabana Point Circle.

The presentation included three different aesthetic levels, each with a commensurate level of financial commitment from the County for implementation. The Board chose the level whose total cost is estimated to be $1.289M and the Board directed staff to provide $250,000 in County funds to be taken out of the FY22 Public Works Department Capital Improvement Project (CIP) sheet for annual commitments. SR-76 (S Kanner Highway) is a State Highway and the FDOT typically maintains sod within its right-of-way; however, the level of proposed landscape is considered an enhancement and the FDOT will rely on Martin County to maintain the enhanced landscaping in perpetuity - after the initial 2-year establishment period. The Board agreed.

FDOT has asked for a Resolution to further document the Board's direction.
