BACKGROUND/RELATED STRATEGIC GOAL:

On August 16, 2022, Special Olympics provided a presentation to the Board and requested that the Board fund a position within the Parks and Recreation Department.  No action was taken.

The proposed FTE position would coordinate all Special Olympic programming along with a Martin County-based team of athletes. In connection with the position, Special Olympics is also requesting access to various Martin County Parks and Recreation facilities for team training and equipment storage, all at no charge.

Special Olympics currently conducts swim practices and hosts swim meets at Sailfish Splash Waterpark’s competition pool via a permit for a summer program from June through July of each year.  Special Olympics also utilizes other County assets for recreational programming in coordination with other organizations.

The Parks and Recreation Department has determined that the estimated annual cost to fund a specialty FTE position (salary, cell phone stipend, office space, etc.) to manage the program effectively is approximately $92,000.

ESTIMATED BUDGET: Therapeutic Recreation Coordinator

Regular Salaries: $55,000

Medicare: $4,200

Education & Training: $2,000

Office Supplies: $1,000
